John Ludwick, aka "Kansas," joined the merchant marine on his birthday in September of 1943. He sailed to the Azores, Northern Africa, Italy, and the Persian Gulf during the War before surviving the Murmansk Run. In Arkhangelsk, John was mistakenly taken prisoner by the Soviets, forcing him to escape by snowmobile in order to return to his ship.
