Description

Jay took a job on a dredge boat on the Mississippi River after graduating high school. When the U.S. entered World War II, Jay joined the merchant marine and worked as an engineer after training on Chesapeake Bay. After the war he began a long career as a printer and photographer.

Lausell, Damian
Description
An account of the resource
Damian came to the mainland United States from Puerto Rico as a 14-year old stowaway. After working for the Civilian Conservation Corps and joining the Navy, Damian sailed as a merchant mariner during World War II. Later in life he was involved in campaigns to reform the National Maritime Union.

Description

Gabe sailed as a merchant mariner during the final year of World War II through the Korean War. During his time at sea he saw dozens of countries and countless port cities. Gabe also worked at Seamen's Church Institute in 1967.
