Gene was one of three mariners who survived the sinking of the SS MARINE ELECTRIC, which sank in a storm off the coast of Virginia on February 12, 1983. Inquiries into the sinking resulted in several industry reforms, including the adoption of life saving suits and the Coast Guard rescue swimmer program.
