Description
An account of the resource
Al Raanes joined the merchant marine during World War II when he was just 16 years old. He sailed as part of an 80-ship convoy to the Philippines that included a cruiser carrying General MacArthur. While at sea in the Philippines Al fell from the rigging and wound up as the first patient on the hospital ship USS HOPE.
