After joining the Marines in 1969 during the Vietnam War, Michael Christle transitioned to a career working on ships in the offshore oil business. He continued working at sea on container ships and with American President Lines until his retirement in 2014.

Gene was one of three mariners who survived the sinking of the SS MARINE ELECTRIC, which sank in a storm off the coast of Virginia on February 12, 1983. Inquiries into the sinking resulted in several industry reforms, including the adoption of life saving suits and the Coast Guard rescue swimmer program.
