Ed Flynn spent 47 years at sea before he retired at age 80. Starting out with the Coast Guard, Ed sailed for several years in Arctic waters, cutting ice and supplying army bases in Greenland during the War. Ed joined the Merchant Marine after the War and worked for Exxon for the rest of his career.

Walter Hughes began working as a deckhand on tugboats in the 1930s before serving as a paratrooper during World War II. He returned from the war to a long career as a tugboat captain and dispatcher in New York Harbor.
