Includes sepia portraits of J. Augustus Johnson, elected as Lay Manager to SCI’s Board of Managers in 1882. Johnson also served as Chairman of the Committee on Legislation and fought for seafarers’ legal protection. He succeeded in convincing Congress to pass the White Bill, which granted mariners comprehensive rights.
