Scope and content

Includes seven Visitors' Books containing entries from visitors to Coenties Slip, where SCI operated a missionary outpost beginning in the 1850s and ending in 1906. Also included are entries from SCI's Missionary at Large, first established with the Rev. E.F. Remington in 1852, succeeded by the Rev. Robert J. Walker in 1859 and the Rev. Isaac Maguire in 1872. The Missionaries at Coenties Slip conducted weekly open-air services for seafarers in port and the families of surrounding neighborhoods in addition to holding individual consultations and distributing reading material.
