Statement to the Welfare Agencies
Flyers were not the only way that labor organizers spread their message. This letter was sent to the Joint Emergency Committee of Seamen’s Welfare Agencies in the Port of New York. The letter is critical of charitable organizations such as the Jane Street Mission and Seamen’s Church Institute. Their specific requests:
“We, employed and unemployed seamen, therefore defend the following:
1. That every man in the Jane Street Mission receive two MEALS per day.
2. That the Seamen’s Church Institute open up all its available beds as
lodging for homeless seamen.
3. That there he no discrimination against any seamen because of race,
color or creed, in the distribution of relief.”
