Description (Scope and Content)
Damian was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1924. At the age of 14 he stowed away on the WASHINTONIAN to the mainland United States. After growing bored of school, he stowed away back to Puerto Rico. Soon after, Damian stowed away for a third time, hitched a ride on a freight train up the east coast, and was denied seamen’s papers by the Maritime Commission because he was too young.
