The Titanic and SCI

Clothing the Crew

On April 18, 1912 more than 200 survivors from the Titanic’s crew arrived at Pier 54 in New York on board the Carpathia. SCI staff were dispatched to the American Seamen’s Friend Society at 507 West Street to assist in the distribution of clothing and toiletries to surviving crew members. Men received a full suit of clothes, boots, a cap, as well as a razor and comb. The 20 surviving stewardesses received complete outfits. The crew were provided with refreshments, and a simple church service was held to mourn the friends and coworkers who did not make it back to shore.
