SS ARCHIBALD R. MANSFIELD Launches

The Liberty ship SS ARCHIBALD MANSFIELD launched from the New England Shipbuilding Yard in Portland, Maine on August 29, 1944. It was the second Liberty named for an SCI staff member. Rev. Mansfield was the Institute’s first superintendent, and it was under his leadership that SCI centralized its operations at the 13-story 25 South Street in 1912.

The New England Shipbuilding Yard employed 24,000 people in 1944, with a production rate of 9 Liberty ships per month. [see The Lookout 1944 October http://qcarchives.com/sci/items/show/1308, and Mansfield, Rev. Archibald R. http://qcarchives.com/sci/items/show/231]
