The Home for Netherland Seamen was officially opened by SCI at 25 South Street on November 15, 1940. The editors of the Lookout described the addition as "a bit of old Holland atmosphere... transplanted from the country of windmills and tulips to a large room on the third floor of the Institute." In December 1941, Dutch Crown Princess Juliana visited the Home to meet her fellow exiled countrymen. Cigars were passed around and the Princess exchanged conversation with a crowd of more than 100 Dutch and Javanese sailors, many of whom had not heard from their families back home in months.
