Damian joined the National Maritime Union in 1944-1945. As an active union member, he became Deck Delegate before service as Ship's Chairman, a position in which he ran meetings and reported problems conveyed to him by his fellow mariners.
Damian sees his involvement in becoming a leader within the union, and his fight to reform the union from the inside out as an extension of his philosophy about the world at large.
