Labor Issues on New York's Waterfront: A Visual History >> The National Maritime Board

The National Maritime Board

The National Maritime Board was a governmental board created to help the maritime industry run smoother and supposedly help labor workers communicate better with the shipowners about their needs. This flyer informs seamen of the problems with the Board, explaining the confusing language of the proposal. According to the flyer, the National Maritime Board would be a strike-breaking arm of the government, “a direct threat to every member of ALL marine unions and to every marine worker." The flyer calls for workers to rally against the proposal.
